Porsche builds a Speedster roughly once per generation, and never many of them. For the 997, the number was exactly 356 cars worldwide, a deliberate tribute to the 356 Speedster that started it all. This is one of them, finished in Pure Blue, the color Porsche Exclusive created specifically for this model, and showing just 1,121 miles from new. It is, in every meaningful sense, a new car.
The Speedster has always been the purist's 911 with a twist of glamour: a chopped windshield raked lower than any other 911, a manual soft top hidden beneath a signature double bubble tonneau cover, and the wide Carrera 4 body shell with the rear axle extended 44mm. Built by Porsche Exclusive in Zuffenhausen as a halo car for the end of the 997 era, it borrowed the very best hardware in the catalog: the wide body of the Carrera 4 and the Powerkit engine of the Carrera GTS. Under the decklid sits the 3.8-litre flat-six in 408-horsepower tune with 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with the seven-speed PDK transmission.
The cabin carries details found on no other 997. The seat centers wear a Speedster specific checkered fabric, a retro nod to the cloth seats of the original 356 Speedsters, set within Black leather accented in Pure Blue. The floor mats are finished with body color seams, the black leather sport seats carry raised stitching on the three-spoke wheel, and the black manual Speedster top stows beneath the double bubble cover that defines the car's silhouette.
Speedsters do not come to market often, and when they do, mileage and color decide everything. This car has both on its side. Pure Blue is the color the model debuted in and the one collectors associate with the 997 Speedster, and low four-digit mileage cars are the ones that anchor the top of the market. The 997 was also the first Speedster Porsche had built since the 964 era, a return after a seventeen year absence, and at 356 units worldwide it remains the lowest production Speedster ever made, fewer than the 936 examples of the 964 Speedster, the 2,104 cars of the 1989 run, and the 1,948 units of the 991 Speedster that followed. Rarer than nearly any GT car, and unlike a GT car, the Speedster was never meant to be common in the first place. An instant centerpiece for any Porsche collection, and one of the few modern 911s that is genuinely irreplaceable.
